John Hughes Toll was born 10/12/1833. I don't know where. He and his wife Mary Peters Toll came west in a wagon train in 1865, 3 months after their first child was born. They left from Springfield, MO. They lived somewhere between Cloverdale and Boonville in CA while their 7 children were being raised. He was my great grandfather. My grandfather, David Lee Toll, was born in 1869 and by the time he was about 12 his father, John, had left the family. My father, Philip Lee Toll, mentioned that his grandfather (John) would show up from time to time in Arcata, CA (where David and his family lived) and then disappear again. The last thing my father and David's sister Ella heard of him was that he had been living in Mariposa or close by. He was known as somewhat of a "seer", but I don't know what was meant by that. He did wander around and probably would have done odd jobs to survive.
If you can find out anything at all about him would surprise me. But good luck, Steve. And thanks for trying. Karel L. Harder
