Joanne Capinaris
Mill Valley dispatcher

Joanne E. Capinaris, a dispatcher for the city of Mill Valley, died of cancer Sunday, March 15, 1992, at Stanford Medical Center. She was 39.

Miss Capinaris was a public safety dispatcher in Mill Valley for 11 years.

Miss Capinaris answered the 911 calls and incoming information lines and dispatched police, fire or city aid when necessary. In addition, she typed reports and worked directly with police officers.

“You have to know the city well. It’s like the hub of the department,” said John Thompson, a public safety dispatcher and longtime friend of Miss Capinaris. “Joanne was really good. She remained calm under crisis.”

Thompson recalled a time when Miss Capinaris helped calm the parent of an infant who had choked on a venetian blind cord until the fire department arrived. Later, she received a letter of commendation for her efforts.

Before working for the city of Mill Valley, Miss Capinaris worked in the office at the San Rafael Police Department. She spent seven years with the department.

She was dedicated to her job, working 12-hour shifts most of the time, said her mother, Alice Capinaris of Novato.

Miss Capinaris was a native of San Francisco. She moved with her family to Marin when she was 12, attending Isabel Cook School. She graduated from Sir Francis Drake High School and College of Marin.

Miss Capinaris is also survived by her father, George Capinaris of Novato, and her grandmother, Angilin Gerojohn of San Francisco.

A Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. today at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in San Francisco.

Burial will be in Greek Orthodox Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Building Fund, 555 Brotherhood Way, San Francisco.

Arrangements are by Duggan’s Serra Mortuary in Daly City.
