When you post, it is very helpful to provide full DOB's on the person you seek. Since you have an online family tree, posting the link to that often answers a lot of volunteers questions and prevents you from getting info you already have...and wrong information:
Your tree identifies Gertrude and Leslie in New Jersey during the 1940 Census in Morris County. There was a Gertrude Woods that died in Morris County in August 1958, no further information.
The Darwin Bittner found by the other person in the 1940 Census living in Perry County, Indiana, was married to Leola, she was the one providing information to the enumerator. He was born 28 June 1918. I found a Leola Louise Poehlein, born 8 Aug 1919, but she died January 1939 in Tell City, over a year prior to the 1940 Census.
Darwin enlisted into the Navy on 15 Nov 1943, released 22 Jan 1946. Since Joy was in California and Darwin born/lived in Indiana. It appears logical that they met in California while Darwin was in the Navy. If the family lore was she abandoned five in CA, before moving to Indiana, again logical they married in CA.
--His military records (if not in the 1973 fire) might contain marriage information (request to commander to marry, pay record changes, contact information, etc):
I'd also recommend posting on Rootsweb.com, more and better volunteers.
Otherwise, based on your family tree, it appears you are doing well in your search.
