Coates/Hardy families Idaho, Utah, California

Looking for descendants of two families – Coates/Hardy who emigrated from UK to USA via Canada in 1900s.

Three brothers surname Coates (William, George & Henry) married three sisters (Elizabeth, Nancy & Eliza, respectively).

William & Elizabeth remained in England, but the others emigrated and here is their history researched by my brother, Douglas.

In 1902, Henry (then single) sailed from Southampton to New York on the ship ‘St Paul’ and thence to Boise City, Idaho.

In 1903 his brother, George, wife Nancy & their two children, Ethel & Harry, together with Nancy’s brother & sister Astley & Eliza Hardy sailed to Canada on the ship ‘Lake Champlain’.

It seems that they soon joined Henry in Boise City, Idaho and, in about 1904, Henry married Eliza (the third Coates/Hardy union). They had two children, Mary born 1904 and Harry (recorded as Henry in the 1920 US census) in 1907. Henry Coates senior was recorded as a florist and served in the US Army 1917/18. They lived in 1309 East Jefferson Street. The family was absent from the 1930 US census.

George & Nancy Coates lived in Warmsprings Avenue, Boise City. He was recorded as a salesman in a Floral Store and Nancy as a seamstress.

By 1920 they had left Boise City and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. Their daughter, Ethel Coates, had married an Austrian named Richard J Rauer in 1912 in Boise City, but the whole family moved to Salt Lake City.

George, Nancy and son Henry lived at 234 South Eighth East, Salt Lake City; George worked as a designer in a florist company and Henry as a bank clerk.

Ethel and Richard Rauer lived at 218 Tenth East Street, with no children recorded.

No records of George, Nancy, Ethel and Richard appear in the 1930 US census., but son Harry turns up living at 820 Canyon Road, Ogden, Weber, Utah (about 12 miles north of Salt Lake City). He was married to Gertrude with two children, Elizabeth and Delores. Harry’s occupation was ‘Brakeman, Electrical Railroad’.

The trail goes cold until the discovery of the death record of Nancy Coates in 1966 at the age of 101 in Rancho Park, Los Angeles, but no record of George’s death.
