I don't think you ever will find out the truth. I would try to contact the courthouse in the county that the letter came from, and look in the criminal dockets and look up the cases.
You might find his aliases that way. I have a feeling that probably none, or very little, of what he said was the truth.
I had a pretty good idea when I couldn't find any trace of him before 1939 that it was a false name.
