Thanks for the information. I had heard of William Keith before, but didn't make the obvious connection. I visited the web site listed in your response...beautiful work. Unfortunately, he's not in my line. Mount Keith (13,977 ft) is about 15 miles due north of Mt Whitney and about the same distance due west of Independence, right on the Inyo Co line. If you are interested in exploring some of your genealogy leads (mostly long shots in my case), I have found two good sites for place names and USGS maps: www.topozone.com and mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnisform.html . Both have good search/place name features. I don't suppose you have run across Daniel Walker Keith (ca 1810-1901) or James F. Keith (1838- ? ) in California?
