Well, I've done a little looking around the net - here's what I found on William Keith (and I'm more convinced that the mountain WAS named after him):
William Keith (1838-1911) The topography of California has inspired artists and writers from early in the state's history. Perhaps no California painter is more associated with depicting California's unique landscape than is the Scottish-born painter William Keith. Keith specialized in painting the state's abundant hillsides, wooded glens, and mountains, most notably the Sierra Nevada. The California Historical Society has thirteen Keith landscapes in its collection, ranging in subject from coastal views to depictions of the High Sierra. It is in the paintings of these mountains that Keith's reverence for the California landscape manifests itself most clearly.

Boy, I sure saw a lot of his painting online - very beautiful landscapes of this area!!
I was very interested in your question as I have been vacationing in this area for about 50 years and never heard of Mt. Keith before. Was trying to see where exactly it was located but didn't find that.
