Don't really know the answer - just a guess. Maybe it was named after William Keith, a friend of John Muir. They made yearly treks to the Sierra Nevada's around Lundy, Muir writing and Keith painting. Found that bit of data in "The Story of Early Mono County" by Ella M. Cain.
