DEATH of A.R. MELONY -- A.R. MELONY, former Senator from this District, is dead. The Contra Costa 'Gazette' says:
'Another has been added to the long list of those who have gone down to the grave, victims to the unquenchable appetite for strong drink. A.R. MELONY, who but one short year since, occupied a high position in our State Government died at Lafayette in this county on Friday, the 1st inst., and was consigned to an untimely grave on the following day, almost unwept, unhonored, and unsung.'
Mr. MELONY formerly represented this county in both branches of the Legislature, and in 1858 was elected to the responsible office of State Controller, which office he held up to January last. He was a man of fair ability, of indomitable energy and will and was on the high road to political fame, when, about a year ago, he became mixed up in a scandalous affair at the Capital, and from that time his political prospects paled, and he fell. He was deserted by his former political associates; domestic difficulties environed him; all hope of further political preferment or of retrieving his former fair fame, forsook him, and he resorted to the inebriating cup as a solace for all his troubles. The result -- an untimely and miserable death.
