This may have occured in what is known as the Mother Lode Country. That thin strip that runs along the western sierra mtns. It roughly is followed by state rt 49. I would have emailed this but AOL says you are not a current member?? You might check the newspsper files for that year. A shooting would have been wrote about. Try the library for books on the mother lode area history. In 1851 gold was being found in more areas than just the mother lode area.
