Shippy, Burton J. 9/27/1838 NY- 4/30/1932 Mt. Ranch, CA. Cremated at Parkview Crematory, Stockton CA. The obit called him a widely known person, and that he had resided 56 years on his ranch in Mountian Ranch, however, as you can see from the census records he did not show up in Calaveras Co until 1920 when he and son Charles lived together. In that year Mary was living in SF with another son. Then when Garfield dies it does not even list his father at all? Perhaps Burton and Mary lived fairly separate lives? Burton and Mary purchased the ranch from E.J and Sarah Nichols 7/23/1915 for $10. They were listed as “of the city of Santa Clara” so clearly had not lived in Mountain Ranch before then. The ranch was the SE1/4 of the SW1/4 of Sec. 8, Tw.4, R13 and a ½ interest in the W1/2 of the SE1/4 of Sec. 8, Twn. 4, R13. It lies on Mountain Ranch Road on the left side going up toward Mountain Ranch from San Andreas, between lower Michel Rd and upper Michel Rd.
Shippy, Garfield Ralph 8/1/1881 CA- 9/11/1915 San Andreas, CA. Burial recorded 9/13/1915, Oakland. Single. “Garfield R. Shippy, a young man recently coming to this count, died at the home of his mother near Mountain Ranch last Saturday of tubuerculosis. The mother recently purchased the J.E Nichols ranch on the San Andreas and Mountain Ranch road and was living there with her two sons. The body was shipped to the California Electric Crematory at Oakland. Deceased was a native of California age 34 years” (Calaveras Prospect 9/18/1915)
