I assume your reference to "Oregon" is to Oregon City, an historic gold-mining town in Butte County. A short account of Oregon City may be found at: http://www.experiencebuttecounty.com/show_attractions_place.asp?pid=507 The text from that page is as follows: ?Entering California over the Applegate and Lassen Trails, a party of Oregonians, captained by Peter H. Burnett, arrived here in Autumn of 1848 to establish the town of Oregon City. Burnett, little more than a year later, became the first Civil Governor of California. Oregon City, for a time, continued to prosper as a gold mining and supply center and then declined into virtual oblivion.? ?Location: Oregon Gulch Rd (PM 5.5), just S of intersection with Derrick Rd, between Oroville and Cherokee.? I found a reference to a George Hayes on page 200 of the book, "History of Butte County" by George C. Mansfield which was published by The Historic Record Co. 1918. There is not enough information to tell if it is the person in whom you are interested. The paragraph tells how he was herding sheep and returned to his cabin to find that Indians had broken in and stolen various articles. He pursued them and was shot, once in the arm and once in the thigh. He was attended by a doctor and survived. This book is available in several libraries but, if you do not have access to it, I would copy the page and send it to you if you provide a mailing address, or I could send it as an attachment to an e-mail.
