Hi Judy- Actually I have quite a bit of info on the family; the surname is Rawle, but other spellings are often found. They were in Amador County by 1856 at the latest, perhaps earlier.
Matthew,b Ireland ca 1810, was in Cincinnati, Ohio by 1842 where he ran a public house on the Ohio riverfront. He married Mary Ann, b PA.In 1850 they were in St. Louis, with several children.Next found in Calaveras 1852 census, surname spelled Ralle. They may have been living in the part of Calaveras that became Amador Co., as they were next found in Volcano, Amador Co.
At least 2 children died there - Maggie Rawle who died of burns when her dress caught fire, and John, who was dragged to death by his horse.Maggie is buried in the cemetery near Volcano.
By mid-1860's the family is in San Francisco, where Matthew Rawle died in 1870 from injuries from a horse and wagon accident.Daughter Mary Ann had married in Amador to a Mr. Meehan and lived her life and raised a family in Amador Co., and contributed to a history of Amador Co., written early in the 1900's.
I'm interested in any more details of their early life in Calaveras or Amador Cos.I've been in touch with Amador Co. Historical Soc., who furnished me with available material.
Any new material is most welcome. They are a co-lateral line to one of my ancestors; their story is fascinating.
