Wounded Heroes Die In France (excerpt)
Died of Wounds – Henry Fred Peterson, son of Olaf F. Peterson, 688 Thirty-first Street, Oakland; Harold Wayne, 212 Woolsey Street, Berkeley.
Peterson was 29 years old, and the son of Mr. And Mrs. Olaf F. Peterson, 688 Thirty-first Street. He was unmarried and made his home with his parents. For twelve years prior to entering the Army in October 1917, he had been engaged in business with his father on Tenth Street. He was in training at Camp Lewis for about nine months. He was sent to France in June 1918, and assigned to Company K, 363rd Infantry, and was in much of the hardest fighting with the First American Army in the vicinity of Verdun until wounded.
The last letter received from him by his parents was dated October 19.He had escaped injury up to that time and mentioned being in excellent health and spirits, having nothing to complain about, and was apparently performing his tasks in helping drive back the Huns with enthusiasm.
Young Peterson was born and reared in Oakland, and was educated in the grammar and high schools. He was a member of the local lodge of Eagles.Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. L. Freitas, of Sacramento, and two brothers, Edwin Peterson, who is employed by the local traction company, and John Peterson, who is with the American forces in Siberia, a member of Company F, 31st Infantry.
