Dear Jackie, California Birth and Death Records have indices online (birth from 1905, death from 1940). Both can be found at www.rootsweb.com There is no "online" marriage record info available (that I have been able to find). I don't even know about a statewide index. However, I offer a suggestion. Go to www.vitalrec.com There, you can choose California, see the State Record Office info (however, usually the county records are more accurate and seem to have pretty much all records). The county records all birth, marriages and deaths and then forwards the record to the State office. I would suggest you delve down to the County of Alameda on the site...there you will see how to order any records, the exact address and phone number of the Alameda Recorder's Office, etc. It seems there is also a Genealogical Society listed on the site, next to the address for the Alameda County Recorder's office. The problem that I have found with marriage records is that if you don't know what year someone was married...then they usually are not willing to do the search for you. If you don't know what years he was married, you may choose to give a small donation and send a letter with the information you have to the genealogical society, and perhaps someone will do the search for you. As a resident of California, I have tried to do a little onsite research in Scotland, Ireland and England....the record keeping there is so different than the way we do it in the states. So, please don't apologize for the need of a little assistance. If you need more help regarding how records are kept in California, please email me at sudavis@home.com and I will try to help you. Best Wishes in your search.
