I checked Ancestry and FamilySearch but didn't find Carl in California after 1920.

I did find a Carl E. Chatel in 1930 in Denver, Denver, CO.
Carl E. Chatel, b. Colorado, 31, U. S. Post Office.
Maud, wife, b. NE, 40.
Leah Curry, stepdau, b. NE, 18, chemist laboratory.

In 1940 they were living in Denver on Hally St.
Carl E. Chatel, b. CO, 41, educ-college 2 yrs, Postal clerk U.S. P.O.
Maud V., wife, b. Ne, educ-high school 3 yrs.

Even though it says he was born in Colorado the age is about the same year as your Carl.

I also found a family tree with
Carl E. Chatel b. 1898, Colorado & died 1947 Denver, Denver, CO.

Maude Holston=wife b. 1880 in Nebraska and died 30 March 1980 Denver, Denver, CO. Married Carl 19 June 1926 in Denver.
Source: One World Tree,

Colorado doesn't publish their death index. You'll find info about ordering a copy of his death certificate at Colorado Dept. Public Health & Environment, Successful Searching!

I didn't find his death info in California or Colorado
