Hello Kathie: My grandparents were in Norwich for at least the reason of the proximity of the Navy Base in New London CT.
My (gr) grandfather was a sailmaker, and was very skilled. He was often called to various bases such as New London just south of of Norwich. Patrick worked in the Brooklyn Navy Yard before and after the Civil War. I may have mentioned he served with Matthew Perry's Expedition to Japan for four years, leaving Phildelphia in October 1852 and serving in Japan and as a shore party at the US Consulate in Shanghai China in 1854 for eleven months. My source for this are his pension records and letters that through some miracle survived for nearly 150 years.
So, work in Canvas was his trade, and I have one final note that he was a sailor before he left Ireland in 1849, likely from Derry or Killybegs in Co. Donegal.

What are some of the other surnames you are seeking on that side of the family? Maybe I'll see something that may link us up.

Mine are McFadden, Gallagher, Ryan, and associates such as Bresland/Breslin, Ansbro,
Byrnes, Cunningham, Doherty, Maguire.
