Byrne, Ire> USA> NY> Ulster Co.
I have several pieces of old correspondence written to Byrne family members in Ulster Co. NY.I can guess at some of the senders and receivers but some are totally unknow to me. I hope the following extracts offer clues to researchers.
Letter 1.From Bridget Keenan (married name) of Stague Ballymahon Lang Post Co Westmeath Ireland to her sister Mary (surname unknown) dated July 28, 1904.Extract of info in ltr: Mary had notified Bridget of death of (their?) brother Thomas;Bernard (relationship unknown) had died; Pat and Catherine were living siblings of Bridget and Mary.Other people mentioned are:Mamie Reily, Mike Ward, Murtaughs, Wards in Lang.
Letter 2.From Bridget to Mary again.dated March 4, 1905.Catherine has died.Bernard had a daughter.Asks about Joseph Ward whose father died,Peter Murtaugh is dead (probably in NY State).Mike Ward is a tradesman.Pat Lynch in Keel died. Paatrick Ward (son of John Ward in Lang) lives in Brooklyn and is married to Tim Cole's daughter of Keel.
Letter 3.Undated letter (but written on Easter Sunday) to Miss Kitty Byrne, Cockburn P. O. Ulster Co. NY from cousin Mary A. Burke 1632 Arch Street Philadelphia, PA.Mary lives with her father who travels a lot - as far south as Florida.They are waiting to move into a new house on Filbert Street very close to where they currently live.Refers to:Aunt Rosie, Uncle Bernard, Laur, Johnnie, Bernard, Mag and Rosie.Rosie lives in Saugerties.
Letters 4 and 5 Undated (October 7th and November 24th, but no year) letters to "My dear friend Annie" from Katie Maher 107 Lauriet St Boston Mass.Refers to Tom, John, Kate H. Maher, Mag Conlon, Maggie Ward, Jimmy H, Ann Moran, Annie Carl, Jim and Mary Riley.
Letter 6.Letter to "My dear friend Annie"from Katie Feeney 112 4th Ave Newark NJ dated November 27, 1889.Refers to Tom (home from South Oxford), Maggie Monday, Mrs. Halley, Mary Kelly, Kate Carey (living in Kingston), Katie Hacket (living in Newark), Mary Ann Maher, Lizzie Doran' Annie Roach, and Kitt Burns, Frank Flookhouse (who died), big Frank Riley.
Letter 7.Letter to Granpa from John of New York, February 15, 1894.John is in the 5th grade.Refers to: Rose and Jane (other children); Aunt Catherine, Uncle Laur, Uncle John' Uncle Bernard, Aunt Rose, little Eddie, Jamie(7 years old), Aunt Mary, Uncle Jim.
Letter 8.To Annie from her sister Eliza dated Jan 27, 1898.Written before Annie marries Mr. B (probably Annie Hacket and Bernard Byrne, my grandparents).Refers to: Mary, Mag, Lizzie, Miss Spaulding (sick), Maggie Ward.
Letter 9. To Annie from her sister Eliza @ 1703 Rhode Island Ave.WAshington DC.No date but probably January 1899.Annie has had a son (probably my father, Lawrence Byrne).Refers to Mary Feeney, Mary, Ella, Edd (in Boston), and Mrs Spaulding.I suspect that Eliza is a domestic in Mrs. Spaulding's home.
If anyone out there sees something of interest, I can mail the complete packet of letters to you. I sure would apreciate some help.Lots of stone walls this past year.
