I've been researching my Byrd family in GA because we're told we're from the Virginia Westover Byrds. Haven't figured out the connection (if any!) yet. But in the course of research I ran across the Byrd - Edward III link. Evidently, Adm. Richard Byrd, after his North Pole and other exploring days were over, took an interest in genealogy, and had the Byrd/Edward III royalty connection proved, He became the head of the Plantagenet Society in America. Goes from Mary Horsmanden, who m. William Byrd I.. back.I'll start with Edward III and go down its less confusing. Edward III to son John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, and 3rd wife Catherine Roet: their daughter Joan Beaufort: her son Edward de Neville, his son George Neville, his son George Neville, his daugher Lady Ursula Neville, (m. Warham St. Leger) her son Anthony St. Leger, his son Warham St. Leger, his dau. Ursula St. Leger Horsmanden .. she m. Daniel Horsmanden and they were the parents of Maria Horsmanden, William Byrd I's wife. I don't know the criteria for membership in the Plantagenet Society or what ties with England they may have. In any case, the connection seems to be one of the few that's "for real" and that can be documented. Hope this helps. (BTW found a lot of this information on the net.. just try some search engines with the Horsmanden or St. Leger or Neville names. The Marshall family has also done some work on this link.)
Sorry for the length, hope this answers some questions.
