"According to Isabelle and Jesse's family Bible, Jesse was born in Perry Co., AL on February 4 1819. (Technically this was not possible since Perry County was formed 10 months later created by the Alabama legislature on Dec.13, 1819 from the Creek Cession of 1814 (from Cahawba, Dallas and Marengo). It was named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry (of Rhode Island), hero of the War of 1812, undoubtedly the source for Jeese's oldest son's name, Oliver Perry Byrd. In 1822 the courthouse was established at Muckle's Ridge, now known as Marion. The county is located in the west-central part of the state, in the Black Belt region. Notable towns include Marion, Uniontown, Heiberger, Perryville and Sprotton (from Cahawba, Dallas and Marengo); Madison Co. had been formed earlier in 1808 from Cherokee and Chickasaw Nations).
Byrd cousins or possibly brothers; James, Jesse, Isaiah, Gabriel, and Pleasant, also were in Alabama and all eventually went west to CA. James and family moved to Peter's Colony in Dallas, TX just prior to 1850. We also find the Jesse Byrd (with his brother Isaiah) and the Saunders family living together in Harrison Co., TX by 1850 and then in Tarrant Co.(Ft. Worth area) prior to their move to California. David and Jane Byrd's son Samuel had planned to go also, but his father-in-law's ill health prevented his family from leaving and they remained in TX. Jesse was in or near Hallsville, Harrsion Co., in northeast TX by the 1850 census and then by 1853, near Dallas/Ft. Worth in Tarrant Co., apparently readying for the wagon train west to California. Isaiah's daughter, Emma Byrd Bush, recalled to her cousin, Anna Belle Byrd, Jesse's granddaughter, "the Byrd family had been quite influential in Texas, and they 'owned Hallsville'. They had had slaves at one time." His brother (cousin), James, who had settled in Dallas and who had already been to CA to pan gold, sent word for his family to come to California. In 1856 Jesse, Isaiah and their young families, and likely the Saunders as well, joined the 500 wagon Keener train to CA. (John D Keener was born 30 Sept 1822. Married Eleanor Bollinger 24 Jul 1842. Eleanor Bollinger b. 4 Feb 1825 North Carolina They had seven children: Emily, Henry,Margaret, Sarah, James, Frances John. John D. was captain of a wagon train to California in 1853 and was the first to bring cattle into the Southern San Joaquin Valley.) James died of sepsis just 2 years after arriving in CA, after blisters on hands from putting up fencing became badly infected. Byrd brothers Pleasant and Gabriel came to CA via the Nicaraugua, Panama overland and Pacific ocean route, as did James on his first trip. Gabriel drowned crossing the Russian River trying to reach the gold fields. Pleasant also settled in Tulare Co. James, Jesse and Pleasant are buried side by side in the Byrd plot in the Visalia cemetery, along with many other children and grandchildren. James' older boys and youngest children and his widow, Mary, returned to Dallas in 1872 to rejoin John Wesley Byrd who had returned to Dallas to manage his fathers' estate in 1862, and this branch of the family remained there, but the three older daughters, Margaret, Mary Ann and Elizabeth, who had already married remained in CA. Jesse, Isabella and children along went to CA by covered wagon and ox team sometime after the birth of James Robert in December, 1852 and before the birth of Louis Napoleon, their first child to be born in CA in February 1857. Its likely they were on one of the Keener wagon trains. That James Robert was born in Tarrant Co., TX, Fort Worth being the gathering spot for the Keener trains, adds substance to the theory that the family left for CA sometime in 1854."
