Thomas Byrd/Bird (Possibly Tapp connection)

Hello,

I've hit a dead end with this gentleman in my searches and wondered if anyone can help.

Going backwards I'll start with my father

Jack Bird 1926- son of
Ralph F Bird 1892-1975 son of
James H. Bird 1855- ? son of
Thomas Bird/Byrd 1817- 1868

The information I have on Thomas is as follows:

-Born @ 1817 Alabama

- His middle name was possibly Tapp

-Served in North Alabama Mounted Volunteers 1837-1838

-Married Polly Higdon in 1838(where-in records his name is spelled Byrd)

- Moved in 1840 to Saline, Gallatin, Illinois, USA

All of their children were born in Illinois and are as follows:

1844 – Rebecca Jane Byrd
1845 – Andrew J Byrd
1848 – John T Byrd
1850 – Sarah C Byrd

- Married Mary Louise Scroggins in 1851 (in which he appears as Bird) and all their children were born in Illinois as follows:

1848 – Samuel J Bird
1855 – James H Bird
1858 – 1887 Mary Cad Bird
1865 – 1939 Henry Bird
1868 – 1946 Sarah Elvira Bird
1869 – 1933 Jacob Bird

Also of note there is a story in my family that there were two brothers who argued and one changed the spelling of his name.

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.
