Notes for ANDREW BIRD:
The following account of Andrewis from, "Portrait and Biographical Album" of Green County, Ohio, by Broadston:
Although this gentleman is a son of one of the prominent and early settlers in Greene County, and has successfully carried on an agricultural life within its bounds for a number of years, it is probably true that his greatest fame rests upon his discovery of the celebrated Magnetic Springs. Years ago the old United Presbyterian Church was put at public sale, and he bought it with the intention of turning it into a double dwelling, he had the changes in it nearly completed, and his sister-in-law's family had moved into one part. In order to havewater convenient he dug a well under the middle of the building, but the water being found to have a peculiar smell he was advised to fill up the well, but this he refused to do. It was found when the plasterers were ready to put on the white coat that the water from this well had turned the plaster yellow, and that the water was magnetic. Mr. Byrd took some of it to Prof. Hoff, of Waynesville, for analysis. The peculiar qualities of the water becoming noised abroad, people came from various parts of the State to bathe in the liquid, which was found to have a wonderful effect upon those affected with rheumatism or kidney complaints. Mr. Byrd was obliged to dispose of the property to capitalists from Dayton, who organized a company and refitted the old church and in the summer of 1888 added many improvements for the comfort and advantage of those who wished to resort to the curative waters. Mr. Byrd received $8,000 for his discovery, the property having cost him $635.
Andrew Byrd, Jr. was born on the home farm in Spring Valley Township, Greene County. He grew up in the wilds of this then new locality, and began life for himself at the age of fourteen years. Going to Xenia he worked in a blacksmith shop under Russell Rice for a short time, and then went to Shelby County, where he learned the trade of Cabinet-making, and worked there for two years. Returning to this county he labored at this trade until 1832, in the fall of that year going down to Bellbrook and casting his first Presidential vote for Andrew Jackson. He then went on horseback to Palmyra, Missouri and thence to Callaway County, Missouri, (this is where his brother, Marcus was living. Palmyra is where his sister, Rebecca Bird Allen and family lived. Andrew was 19 years old at this time) where he remained all winter, in the spring going to Hannibal and taking the boat for home.
For years Mr. Byrd devoted his attention to agriculture labors, from which he has retired to enjoy the fruits of his former industry. His farm comprises one hundred and forty-eight acres, his residence property being a square south of the Magnetic Spring, with three houses upon it, and he also owns another house in the corporate limits of Bellbrook.

Notes for WILLIAM BYRD:
William Byrd was born in a log house and his mother died before he was four years of age. William spent the first eighteen years of his life on a farm and received a good practical education in the country schools. At the age of eighteen he began learning the carpenters trade and after becoming proficient in the trade, worked in Bellbrook for his brother Andrew until 1845. The next seven years he engaged in the merchandising business first clerking for Benjamin Allen in Bellbrook Ohio, after which he went to Spring Valley and entered into partnership with Moses Walton. He then sold out his interest and moved to Marion, Indiana, and opened a dry goods store with which he was connected until 1862. After disposing of this business he was engaged as clerk in a mercantile house until 1865, possibly with Obed Allen at which time he became bookkeeper in the banking house of Jason Wilson & Co., with whom he remained thirteen years. In 1880 he entered into partnership with Charles W. Humphreys, in the lumber and hardware business, and at the latter's death, January, 1886, he succeeded to the business and ran the same until his death. William married, September 16, 1847, in Greene County, Ohio to Mary Smith, daughter of Jacob and Amelia Smith, of the same county and state. This union produced three children: George W. (died in infancy), Edwin L. and Louisa, wife of Solomon Janes. William took considerable interest in politics, butnever was an aspirant for public office. He voted with the Republican party ever since its organization.
In 1895, the following was written about William's death. It most likely appeared in the local Bellebrook, Ohio paper.
Andrew Byrd, of this place received word last week announcing the death of his youngest and only brother William Byrd of Marion, Indiana, August 16, 1895. He was 76 years of age and leaves two children; one son and one daughter. He married Mary Smith of New Burlington, who was a sister to Jas. Smith, who was a blacksmith for years at that place. This family was related to Jackson Smith's family of near Mt. Holly. Wm. Byrd used to clerk for Benj. Allen when he kept store here, and went from here to Spring Valley where he formed a partnership with Moses Walton and started a general store, and when he left there he moved to Marion, Ind., and started a store which he carried on for several years, then went into the bank as a partner. He and his son then engaged in the lumber, doors, sash and builders hardware business, which business we are informed he was conducting at the time of his death.
