Alexander & James Byrd / Bird of NC
I am looking for information on the Byrd/Bird families of Columbus, Brunswick, and Bladen counties.
My known ancestor was James Byrd (also spelled Bird) born about 1810-1815. He married Lydia (last name unknown). They had several children:
Euphemia born circa 1833
Shade born circa 1837
Anna born circa 1839
Harriett born circa 1840
Frances born circa 1846
Euphemia never married (that I know of) but had three children:
David James Byrd married Alice Catherine Champion
Curtis Byrd
Henry Byrd
Also in these areas of Brunswick and Columbus counties were several other Byrd families. There was an Alexander Byrd (also spelled Bird at times) from the Columbus County and Bladen County area. In the same general area I have found 6 Byrds that are all of the right ages to be his sons. They are: James, William, Thomas, Jacob, Christenberry, and Shade (or Shadrick).
The 1820 census of Columbus County lists Alexander as having six young males in the household. So far I have only proven one of them to be his son. I found a Columbus County deed where Alexander gives land to his son William. I am currently trying to prove that the other 5 Byrds are his sons or not.
The same names do appear in generation after generation. This is another reason why I believe they are all sons of
Alexander. For example, Jacob Byrd had a son named
Alexander. And variations of the "berry" name pop up
among the Byrds. William had a son named Rasberry or
Rollberry. James had a son named Shade, and Shade had a son named Thomas.
This is all very confusing right now, but if anyone has any information that would help me, I would be very grateful. I will share any information that I have. Please email me.
