Thomas Bynum 10/07/00
First of all I would like to clear up some other folks in their research. If you look at LSD files in regards to Isaac Bynum, Senior. You will see where some researchers have identified him as ISAAC NEWTON BYNUM. This is INCORRECT. No where is there a document that proves the middle name of NEWTON. He is simply known as Isaac Bynum. You will also notice some researchers claim that his first wife was Cynthia Ellis. This has never been proven. It is based on the assumption that on the 1790 census Isaac is living next door to a Jesse Ellis. But this Jesse Ellis did not have a daughter named Cynthia and researchers of the ELLIS lines have never documented a Cynthia by any Ellis of this time frame that could have been Isaac's first wife. The only reason it is believed that Isaac Bynum, Sr., had three wives is because the wife found on the 1800 census of Pendleton District, SC is younger than the wife on the 1790 census of Chatham Co., NC. A great grandson of Isaac Bynum, Sr., in Jackson County, AL in the early 1950s stated that Isaac Bynum had two wives, a woman named EASLEY and a woman named HANEY. It is obvious this great grandson was not aware of the first wife who mothered: Asa, Rebecca, John, James and Cynthia Bynum. All of these children with the exception of James Bynum settled in Blount County, Alabama starting in 1818 and by 1830 all can be documented on that census. Isaac Bynum on the 1800 census is living next door to a John Easley in Pendleton District, SC. This John Easley is believed to have had a daughter that was Isaac's second wife. But she is unidentifiable by name on that census and it is apparent that if she and Isaac had any children it is apparent they did not survive. It appears she died before 1804. This is based on the birth date of the son Isaac Bynum who was born 14 Sep 1805 in Pendleton District, SC. Based on later censuses in Jackson County, Alabama there is a strong association of the Haney families being either next door or near both Isaac's. Because of this association and what the great grandson stated in the early 1950s the third wife of Isaac Bynum, Sr., is assumed to be the Haney woman and the mother of Isaac Bynum the son. There is a land transaction in Jackson County dated 26 December 1831 which reflects Isaac Bynum, Sr., and his wife Blancy Bynum selling land to a Thomas Fondren for the sum of $250.00.The judge, a Wm. S. Compton, verifies that Isaac Bynum, Sr. and Blancy could not read nor write and he verifies in statement as such and acknowledges their "marks." Judge Compton refers to Isaac Bynum as "Senior." This will be the second time that Isaac Bynum is referred to as "Senior" as stated in this document.Isaac is selling his original tract of land that he purchased in Huntsville. It appears that Old Isaac did not improve this holding very much based on the purchase price and the selling price as they are one and the same amount. So because of what has been said and the association to the Haney families and the fact that there are Haney family members buried in the Bynum Cemetery of Maynard's Cove, the assumption is that Blancy was a Haney. Isaac Bynum, Sr., will die after the 1840 census is taken and before the 1850 census is accomplished. His grave has really never been found. The great grandson of the 1950s stated that Old Isaac was buried in the Liberty Cemetery at McBroom Hollow. I tend to believe that Old Isaac is buried in the Bynum Cemetery in Maynard's Cove where there are identifiable Haney family members and Isaac Bynum the son with his two wives. It is not known when Blancy died, probably in the same time frame as she does not appear on the 1850 census either.
The son, Isaac Bynum will be known throughout his lifetime as Isaac Bynum, Jr. He will marry Tabitha Young on 20 April 1830 in Maynard's Cove. Tabitha Young is of Tennessee and she was born 11 Dec 1809 in Franklin County, TN. Tabitha's parents have never been identified. The early Government Land Records reflect a James W. Young of Franklin County, Tennessee buying 79.50 acres in Jackson County on Certificate number 3945 dated 8 June 1833. This James W. Young may have been Tabitha's father. This Isaac Bynum and the wife Tabitha will be the father and mother for the perponderance of Bynums in Jackson County for the next 70 years or to the turn of the century (1900). Isaac Bynum, Jr., will die 26 Jan 1881 and is buried in the cemetery named after him; the Bynum Cemetery in Maynard's Cove; he is buried next to his first wife Tabitha Young, her grave is unmarked and his is also; but it is identifiable by descendants and it is a rock and marble tomb or house. Tabitha Young died 14 Mar 1856. Isaac married a second time to Rebecca Morris on 29 Jul 1856 in Franklin Co., TN by Justice of the Peace JA Silvertooth. Rebecca was born 20 Jul 1823 and she is the daughter of Samuel M. Morris and Mary Saint. Rebecca will survive Isaac and die 18 Jun 1910. She is buried next to Isaac and her grave is marked with a headstone in the Bynum Cemetery. Isaac's children are all identifiable by his family Bible and his death probate in Jackson County, Alabama.
Isaac and Tabitha will have the following children:
1. Mary E. Bynum (questionable what her middle name really is. Some descendants say Emaline. I think it is Elizabeth.) born 31 March 1831. She will marry John Calhoun Tinney on 22 Jan 1850. Mary and John will have the following children: Lucy Ann, William Ambrose, James Andrew, Charles Lewis, Martha Jane and John Franklin Tinney. Mary E., will die Dec 1873 and is buried in the Liberty Cemetery at McBroom Hollow, Jackson County.
2. James Monroe Bynum. See previous posting, and one correction to RWBaird's Book. RWB reported a Stephen Bynum as a son of James Monroe based on the 1860 census of Jackson County. This is in error. Stephen Bynum is not his son but baby brother.
3. Nancy Rebecca Bynum born 3 Dec 1834 died 24 Aug 1854. She never married cause of death unknown.
4. William Robert Bynum see previous post.
5. Benjamin Franklin Bynum born 1 Oct 1839 died Sep 1909. He will have two families. His first wife was Martha Jane Bynum a twin daughter of Robert Bynum and Bathsheba McElvaney. They married on 1 May 1859 in Maynard's Cove. Martha was born in 1830 and she will be known as Mattie. Martha died 31 Mar 1881. She and Benjamin will have the following children: Nancy Angeline, Isaac Hugh, William Franklin Poole, Robert James, Thomas Jefferson and BTA (female) Bathsheba Tabitha Annie Bynum. (Thomas Jefferson Bynum is my grandfather). Benjamin will marry a second time to Lorinda "Laura" C. Walsh Hoge (Hogue). They will have three sons: Lawrence Milton, John Lewis and Hal Cunningham Bynum.
6. Isaac Newton Bynum born 25 May 1842 and he will marry first to Cynthia Potter. She is the daughter of Jonathan Watham Potter and Eliza Pace. Their children are: William Thomas, Jasper Talley, Rebecca Ellen, James Henderson, Samuel Lafayette, John Newton, Charles Wilburn, Julia Elizabeth and Emily Cornelia Bynum. Cynthia will die 13 Jul 1896 and is buried in the Bynum Cemetery, Maynard's Cove. Isaac Newton Bynum will marry a second time to Nancy Josephine "Josie" Cunningham on 4 Dec 1902. Isaac Newton Bynum will die 24 Sep 1924 and is buried next to his first wife in the Bynum Cemetery. Josie will die 13 Jun 1932 and is buried at Goosepond Cemetery, Jackson County.
7. Thomas William Bynum born 19 Jan 1845. He will marry Susan J. Bellomy on 21 Feb 1863. Young Thomas will enlist in the Union army, the First Independent Vidette Cavalry Company "A". He was captured by CSA forces on 26 Sep 1863 at Hunts Mill, AL he will die on 16 Jan 1864 at Danville, VA of pneumonia as a POW. Thomas will have no issues.
8. Jasper Luther Bynum born 8 Sep 1847 married first to Susan M. Wininger on 17 Nov 1867. They will have one issue: Thomas Bynum. Susan died 17 Jul 1869, Jasper will marry a second time to Arminda Alice Foster on 16 Mar 1871. They will have the following children: Mary Rebecca, Ewing, Jasper Luther, Isaac Almon, Laura, Avis Pearl, Walter Newton and Edith E. Bynum. Jasper Luther died 28 Jan 1905 and is buried in the Bynum Cemetery, Maynard's Cove. His wife Arminda will preceed him and die 4 Apr 1892 and is buried in the same cemetery.
9. Jesse Wilburn Bynum born 20 Mar 1850 married twice no issues by either wife. First wife was Martha Ann Bellomy they were married 7 Jan 1874 and his second wife was Delia Elizabeth Precise whom he married on 4 Aug 1909.
10. John Lewis Bynum information in a previous post.
11. Ewin Stephen Bynum was born 7 Mar 1856 his mother Tabitha will die seven days after giving birth to him. Ewin will marry Frances Jean Shelton on 23 Nov 1873. They will have four children: Martha Alice, Eva Carlton, Ewin Stephen, Jr., and Benjamin Oscar Bynum.
For the owners and readers and copiers of RWBaird's book, Bynum and Baynham Families of America 1616-1850, published 1983, Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, MD this listing of children will correct his listing of Isaac Bynum, Jr. children as reflected on page #214 and 215, CHART 5-24. RWB reflects only nine issues and one of the names is incorrectly listed as a Joseph Bynum. The chart on these two pages is incorrect.
