Seems clear to me that Fanny was first married to a Foscue. I note that there were two of them in the 1790 census of adjacent Jones County, and five Foscue households in the 1800 census of Jones and Craven -- so there were persons of that name in the area.

The only other way that she could have a son named John Foscue is if the son were illegitimate. In that case the son would bear the surname of the mother.
