Dear Pamela,
My main concern was establishing to my satisfaction that David Byers' son Samuel indeed moved west from York Co. SC and died in Georgia.I stress "my" satisfaction.
As far as DAR eligibility is concerned, I am not familiar with their requirements, but I assume that the DAR burden of proof is higher than what the available records will afford for establishing that "our" Samuel is identical to the Samuel Byers who served in Neel's Reg't with Capt. William Byers. My personal belief is that they are most likely one and the same individual.
However, your statement that the tombstone in Beersheeba Presby. Church cemetery for the Samuel Byers who died in 1817 contains no birthdate does open a new can of worms--but only in regard to this particular Samuel.I think we need to find out how many transcriptions have been made of these cemetery monuments, by who, and whether they are complete or partial listings.
If it is at least plausible that this particular Samuel died as an adult, then we would have to look again at each Byers family group living in York County in 1817 to further assess if it was plausible that this individual would have been old enough to serve in the Revolutionary War.One direct way of doing that would be to check the 1810 census records for York County to determine if there is another head of household called Samuel Byers in addition to Samuel Baldwin Byers.
I reiterate, more directly than in my last post, that although Thurlo made many contributions to our understanding of the Byers family, in my personal opinionhis presentation should come with a "Caution!" label.
