Don't know how much this will help, but my GG Grandfather is Robert B. Snyder, and I suspected the B was for Byerly, as one of his children had the middle name of Byerly. That said, I didn't know WHY he would choose the name Byerly, unless it was his wife's (or mother's) maiden name.
I recently got a death Cert for Robert Snyder (b. 1860, d Feb 1916 in Dauphin County PA), and it showed him being born in Union, PA (Uniontown) in Dauphin County.

Armed with that info, I went to the 1870 census, and lo and behold, I found my GG Gfather, Robert B. Snyder, age 11, living with HENRY E. and SARAH BYERLY in Union (Uniontown) PA. Henry E. Byerly is 33 (b. 1837) and Sarah is 27 (b. 1843). I've looked forward and backward in census data, and Henry E. Byerly is nowhere to be found in the USA, though the 1870 census shows him being born in PA (Sarah was b. in MASS).

Maybe we are linked, maybe not. I'd love to hear how and why Robert B. Snyder was living with the Byerly family of Union, PA in 1870. If in fact they were relatives of his mother (i.e. uncle/aunt) it makes sense, and I can confirm that my GGG Grandparents are Byerlys!
