John BYERLY and wife, Elizabeth HARMAN

The families of the subject BYERLY and HARMAN lived near the border between Donegal and Mt. Pleasant Twps., Westmoreland County, PA, but my John BYERELY moved to Armstrong County, with several of the Harman relatives (about 1823, according to the tax lists).

Elizabeth HARMAN was the daughter of Philip HARMAN, Jr (and his wife Elizabeth HUMM) and the granddaughter of Philip HARMAN Sr who was killed by the Indians during the Revolutionary War. The HARMAN's had been in Westmoreland since before the Revolution. A brother of Philip (Jr), Andrew HARMAN was one of two sons taken prisoner by the Indians, during the Revolutionary War. HARMAN had several spellings (as did the BYERLY name), but the earliest form appears to have been German "HERMAN".

The 1st BYERLY at this location was named Adam, and he bought land there in 1795 from Shipistown (sic-Shippensburg?)Cumberland Co, PA. Tax lists do not begin in this part Westmoreland County until 1812, but they then show a Michael BYERLY with Adam, and beginning in 1813, the subject John BYERLY. In 1819, single males, George and Adam BYERLY are taxed. Finally, in 1825, a Michael BYERLY Jr and in 1834 a Samuel BYERLY also show up as single males. The original Adam BYERLY (according to an 1835 Westmoreland Co Will) left sons George & Daniel, and daughters Susannah COVER, Mary FELGAR, Elizabeth ROADMAN and Catherine.

The above HARMANs are not to be confused with Christian and Christina (LENHART) HARMAN, who had three daughters who married 3 sons of Andrew BYERLY of Bushy Run Battlefield fame. Also, the above BYERLYs are proven to NOT be descendants of the just mentioned Andrew BYERLY.

Where does my John BYERLY belong? It seems probable he was from an area east of Westmoreland Co, PA, before 1800.
