It was the custom in parts of "Germany", particularly where the Lutheran or Reformed church held sway, to give the children 2 names, the 1st of which was generally Johann or Hans for boys & Anna or Maria for girls. They were almost never referred to by this name, only the 2nd name, unless the boy was names "Johannes" & then he was called by that. Anglicized it was John. In Catholic areas, they were rarely given more than one name, the exception being Anna Maria.
