Hi Nina,
the earliest ancestors I know of from Sweden are my grandfather's parents. His father was Karl Johan Andersson By according to the 1890 census and his birth parish (in 1862) is listed as Ny (Josse) Vermland lan. (note the spelling "By"; in the US and on the ship passenger list the surname is spelled "Bye"). I don't know where that village is so I don't know if it is near Sunne.I also do not have any information about his parents names or any siblings. My grandfather, Frans Oscar, born 1885, was one of six or seven children. The family immigrated to the US in 1893.
Have you checked for your family in the 1890 Swedish census? The web site is www.foark.umu.se/census/s/search.asp
I have also been told that the surname "Bye" is not originally Swedish.I have been told that perhaps it has Norwegian or Danish routes? But you would know more about the historical issues of land boundaries than I would.Perhaps their area of Sweden was at some point long ago annexed by the other country?
If I find out any more info that might connect our families I wll let you know.
Brigid
