Anita, The will of Joel Blackwell refers to Sarah Ann Doggett (Byars) (Blackwell) as the widow of William Byers (Byars). Also mentioned in the will is Sarah’s illegitimate son, Bushrod Doggett and Sarah’s son George Byars, identified as the co-executor of Joel’s will and referred to as Joel’s son. George was the son-in-law of Joel Blackwell, married to his daughter, Anna. George Byars was a brother to Stripling. William Byars and his brother-in-law, Joseph Suttle died during the Revolution. Joseph Suttle was married to Sarah’s sister, Molly Doggett. After the deaths of their husbands, Sarah and Molly remarried, Sarah to Joel Blackwell and Molly to Joel’s brother, Isaiah Blackwell. Joel Blackwell’s first wife and mother of all of his children was Henrietta Byars. Henrietta was the daughter of James "Jonas" Byars and Frances "Fanny" Collins. I believe the Byars, Blackwell, and Doggett families were allied back in Virginia. Sarah Ann (Doggett) Byars-Blackwell died 12 August 1823. Estate proceedings disclose the names of seven of her children by William Byars; Nancy Ann who married her first cousin George Suttle, James who married Elizabeth Walker, Sarah wife of Rev. George Kelly, Elizabeth who married John Kelly, Stripling who married Elizabeth (?), George who married Anna Blackwell and Charles. It is believed that Sarah Ann and Joel Blackwell are buried on land adjacent to State Line Baptist Church (formerly Blackwell's Church) I have seen Stripling’s wife Elizabeth attached to two or three different surnames but have never seen any documentation. The Shelby North Carolina library also has good information. The library in Forest City is the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County in the old bank building. ________________________________ Source-Rutherford County NC Wills and Misc.
