Biars/Byars of Gallipolis, Ohio & WV

I am looking for the ancestry and country of origin of my great-grandparents -- Augustus BIARS (b unknown/died 1916) and his wife Kate KRAUSE (b abt 1852/died 1932), lived in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio. The last name was BYERS and changed to Biars in the 1800s. The name appeared as Biars, Biar, Buyers, Byars, Byers and Biards in various documents. Krause also had various spellings. Two of Augustus and Kate’s children came to West Virginia: my grandmother Emma Catherine (b July 20, 1878/died Aug. 26, 1967) came to Abraham, Raleigh County, WV, and married George Washington SMITH Jr. and brother Fred came to Hinton, Summers County, WV. Sons, Augustus and Chris stayed in Ohio. Henry drowned in the Ohio River, one source says at 12 and another at 19. John left the state and the family never heard from him again. Cousins in Ohio recall the couple being German speaking immigrants but no one knows their country of origin. Various family members recall hearing that they were from German, Russian or Holland. One child said he was raised as a Catholic. The couple was described as being "Black Dutch." That could mean "Black Deutsch." There are several theories about what that term means.
