My last name is BUSWELL, I have traced my family line back to the early 1000's to a Martin (not certain if he ever used a last name, but his son ("Sieur") Robert and his children did adopt the surname de BOSEVILLE (de BOSVILLE / de BOSSVILLE / de BOSVILE / de BOSVILLE, etc.) after the Battle Of Hastings in 1066. There are so many variations of the name, it'll make your head spi; probably because whenever it was recorded, whomever recorded it, spelled it the way it sounded. Anyway, after a few hundred years, the prefix "de" was dropped, and then the spelling began to get "mangled" even more. Anything from BISEL, BISSELL, to BOSWELL, to BOSEL, to BOSSELL, to BOZWELL, to BOSWALL (the Scottish line), to BUSWELL, to BUZWELL, to BUZZEL, to BUZZELL, to BUSEL, to BUSSEL, to BUSELL, to BUSSELL, and perhaps even a dozen more. Now, I realize that Simon(e) BUZZEL (BUZEL, BUZZEL, BUSSEY, BUSEY, etc.) may have been the original ancestor to some of the BUZZELL's in America and have a Norman / French connection, but so does all of the BOS's, BOZ's, BUS's as well. Are you thoroughly befuddled yet? I don't mean to belittle any of these family surnames, it just gets a wee bit amusing (and frustrating) at times, especially for us family-history researchers, because we want to be as correct as possible. I have yet to prove that your Simon(e) BUZZELL has any connection to my family, other than the name, as yet, but I have a hunch THEY may all be connected somewhere in time (especially since both Simon(e) and Martin (b. in the early 1000's), BOTH have that Normandy connection . In Normandy today there is a place called "BEUZEVILLE" & "BOSVILLE" in north-central Haute (upper)- Normandy within a few miles of each other, also they are conspicuously in the general area where Marin once resided. I have also discovered that the Norman's were in Denmark as early as the 5th century A.D., before then settling in Normandy, France in the 8th or 9th century A.D. It is possible that's also where Simon(e) BUZZELL's roots lie (Denmark at some point). Just something to consider, and I apologize for being long winded. I'd be interested in anything else you might have about the BUZZELL family.
