My direct ancestor is Philip Buzzell/Buswell, born in Wells, Maine about 1789/1790.
He married 1] Ednah Witham in 1820. They had two sons, Joshua, b. 27 Sep 1820 and John, b. 31 Jan 1823, both in Kennebunk. Ednah died 21 Feb 1823.
Philip married 2] Julia Ann Littlefield on 14 June 1829. They had the following children: George W, b. abt 1830; Simon W, b. abt Nov 1830; Martha A, b. abt 1835 and James Dorrence, b. 4 Feb 1839. They were all born in Kennebunk.
Philip died 12 June 1855 and is buried at the Pine Grove Cemetery in West Kennebunk. Photo of his stone is posted at www.vitualcemetery.com
York County land records indicate that Philip's father was Isaac Buswell. Rev Herbert Leslie Buzzell's manuscript in the NEHG gives a marriage of Isaac Buswell to Sarah Brown in Kennebunk, Maine on 19 Jul 1788. He suggests that Philip was their son. That marriage is listed in the books for the Second Parish Church of Wells, now Kennebunk.
In the 1820 Federal Census, Isaac's name is listed right before Philip's, indicating that they lived next to each other.
Years of research has failed to produce positive documentation to help me prove any more of Philip's ancestry. A preponderance of evidence is leading me towards the conclusion that Philip's father is the Isaac Buswell, born 1 Aug 1771 in Wells, Maine, the son of of Isaac Buswell [b. 16 Dec 1744 in Wells] and Hannah.
Town records for Wells were lost in a fire in 1911. Church records also fail to provide the documentation I am seeking. I have no information on the death of Philip's parents.
If you have any information or records which would help me prove Philip's ancestry, please e-mail me. I would be most grateful to finally find the answers which I have been searching for, for over 35 years.
My direct linage from Philip is well documented but I am still researching descendants of Martha A. Buzzell who married Nicholas Grant and James Dorrence Buzzell who married Jennie Coombs.
