Peter Bussard in Washington Co. Maryland
Peter Bussard was an executor for the estate of my ancestor Johan Adam Householder who wrote his will in Washington Co., MD in 1791. At an earlier time, Peter Bussard (Bosart) (B. 1761, d. 1802) married Maria Margaret Householder, daughter of Johan Adam Householder. They had at least 7 children: Daniel, Ulstey, Peter, John Wesley, Samuel, Susan, and Sophia. My book, "The Householder Genealogy" lists them on page 83.

There is another Elenor Buzzard/Clapper on page 359 and 360 that I discovered today in the Index of THE CLAPPERS IN AMERICA BOOK 1980, by Marie Leighty Engle
Page 359 Henry CLAPPER and Sarah Elenor Buzzard (no source for the name Elenor)
Henry Clapper appears to have left Huntingdon County ca 1806 and went with the tide of migrations to the new State of Ohio and settled first in Fairfield County there. Other young Clapper men from Huntingdon and Bedford counties were going west at this time and they followed the same pattern. They disappeared from the Pa. records and showed up in the Ohio records., then forgotten of their existence in Pennsylvania. Ohio tax records indicate that in 1806 Henry Clapper was now a taxpayer in Fairfield County, Clear Creek Twp.
"Portrait and Biographical Records of Allen and Van Wert Counties: tell us that Henry Clapper was a native of Pa., served in the War of 1812, married Sarah E. Buzzard of Pa., cleared a farm from the wilderness and died at the age of 82.
The military service records of the War of 1812 at the National Archives show that Henry Clapper was drafted 31 August 1814 at Fairfield Co., Ohio and was to serve a 6 months period. He served under Capt. James Rightmire's command in the Ohio Militaia for only 4 months andthen hired Jacob Hupp to substitute for him for the remaining 2 months. Henry Clapper was discharged at Detroit 31 December 1814 and his residence at that time was given as Granville, Ohio. He received one land grant Warrant of 80 acres in the first provision made to soldiers of the War of 1812. Peter and Alan (Adam) Bussard were evidences of his service. It is quite likely that these two men were related to Henry's wife, Sarah Buzzard. His applicaiton for Bounty Land dated 1851 and one in Rocking Co. 12 October 1838. Biographical records state that he was a millwrigt by trade. He moved from Fairfield County to Allen County ca 1832.
(Son Andrew Clapper stated in 1880 census that his parents, Henry and Sarah Clapper were born in Pa.)
p. 361. Sara Clapper, his wife, must have died prior to 1850 as we now find that Henry Clapper is in the household of his son Andrew Clapper in Allen Co.

Death: 1847 in Adams County, Ohio 2

BIRTH YEAR OF ADAM BUZZARD.
It has been reported that ADAM BUZZARD was born "circa 1791" in Hampshi re County, Virginia (now West Virginia). (Source: The Buzzard of Huntingt on County, Indiana; Pinkerton, Max; page 16).
The estimated age of Adam would make him one of the four sons born 1785-17 94 found in the home of his parents in 1810.
Adam Buzzard was a resident of Clear Creek Township, Fairfield County, Oh io in 1830. His household was comprised of: 1 male and 1 female "of 30 a nd under 40" (b. 1791-1800); 1 male "of 10 and under 15" (b. 1816-1820 ); a male "of 5 and under 10 (b. 1821-1825); and, 2 females "under 5" ( b. 1826-1830). (Source: 1830 US Federal Census of Ohio, Fairfield Townshi p, Clear Creek Township, page 274).
A synthesis of the 1810 and 1830 data would place his birth year as 1791-1 794. As his brother John was born 1794, this would place Adam more precise ly at 1791-1793; that is, circa 1792.
It is highly relevant that Clear Creek Township is located in the extre me southwest corner of present Fairfield County, and shares its southern b order with adjacent Perry Township, Hocking County, Ohio. Hocking County w as carved out of the souther part of old Fairfield County (and other count ies) in 1818. However, until 1850, Perry Township remained in Fairfield Co unty. More significantly, in 1820 Perry Township, Fairfield (now Hockin g) County, Ohio was the residence of George Buzzard, son of George Frederi ck Buzzard, Jr. and Elizabeth Lattig. Thus, in 1820 George Buzzard and h is presumed brother Adam resided close one to the other in adjacent townsh ips.
HOCKING COUNTY, OHIO - 1847.
It has also been reported that ADAM BUZZARD died 1847 in Adams County, Oh io. (Source: The Buzzard of Huntington County, Indiana; Pinkerton, Max; pa ge 16).
An "Adam Buzzard" married ELIZABETH WINTERS in Hocking County, Ohio in 184 7. It is possible that Adam remarried at about 55 years of age, then remov ed to Adams County where he died later the same year. However, it is mo re likely that it was a son, ADAM BUZZARD, JR. and one of the two sons fou nd in the 1830 census; i.e., born about 1825 who married about age. If t he report of his death in the same year is valid, the two items may be con nected.
However, his death in Adams County is puzzling. His brother Henry, the only member of the family then in Adams County, had died there two years ear lier, in 1845. Possibly, Henry had asked him to come back to Adams Coun ty to help his wife Elizabeth.

An Adam Buzzard appears in Sugar Creek, Allen County from 1850 through 18 70 of the approximate age of Adam of Hampshire County, Virginia; howeve r, his birth place is consistently listed as "Maryland."

Note:
(George) Frederick Buzzard. Jr. - Father of John Buzzard of Huntington Cou nty.
His Name.
As with his father, the name of John Buzzard's father is not wholly certain. He is referred to as "George Frederick Buzzard, Jr." in The Buzzar ds of Huntington County, indicating that he bore the same name as his father, believed to be "George Frederick Buzzard." However, his father referred to him simply as "my son Frederick" in his will; and, in available census records he is listed as "Frederick Buzzard (Jr.)." Most notably, the younger Frederick signed his name "Frederick Buzzard" attesting to his witnessing of a marriage performed in 1802 in the Bear Garden Monthly Meeti ng house in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia).
For the sake of simplicity, he will hereafter referred to as "Frederick Bu zzard, Jr."
His Birth Year.
It has been estimated by some that Frederick Buzzard, Jr. was born "circa 1757" in Phoenixville; that is, about two years before sister Madgalena Buzzard (1759) and about four years before his brother John Buzzard (1761). This estimate was probably based on naming practices of that era th at suggested that the first son be named after the father's father; that is, it was presumed that because he bore the same name as his father Frederick Buzzard, Jr. was the first son born in Phoenixville shortly after the Pennsylvania marriage.
This order or birth, however, is contrary to the conclusions of some fami ly researchers that John Buzzard was the "oldest son." And, while histories of Chester County are obviously wrong with regard to claims that son John Buzzard was born in Hesse-Cassel and came to American with his fathe r, the implication that he was the eldest son is supported by a body of ev idence; for instance:
·Historical accounts consistently list this order of birth of the so ns of Frederick and Susannah Buckwalter: "John, Frederick (or George), and Jacob."
·The placement of Jacob as the third son is, in fact, confirmed by the self-testimony of Jacob Buzzard in 1850 that he was "78" years of a ge as of the 1st of June 1850; that is, mathematically in 1772, but more likely in 1771, three years after sister Susannah Buzzard (1768).
·Most significantly, John Buzzard received the eldest son's traditional most-favored treatment in their father's will. He was bequeathed sole ownership of the family "plantation," as well the family's prized "house clock" in it. In addition, he was granted joint ownership of lands grant ed to Frederick and Jacob.
In the 1810 census sons John Buzzard and "Frederick Buzzard (Jr.)" are bo th listed in the age category "of 45 and over;" that is, born in the ye ar 1765 or earlier. Thus, if John was born in 1761, by necessity Frederi ck Buzzard, Jr. was born in one of the following years: 1762, 1763, 17 64 or 1765 in Phoenixville.
The most compelling support for the birth of Frederick Buzzard, Jr. in the period 1762-1765 is his military service as a Private in Capt. Samuel Roberts' Company, 2nd Battalion of Militia in 1784 - a year after the cessation of hostilities in the American War of Independence. The laws governing militia service in the old colonies/new states specified a minimum a ge of 18, and service was generally limited in the enlisted ranks to tho se 18 to 25 years of age. Thus, to have served in 1784 Frederick, Jr. was born prior to 1766, and most likely between 1759-1765, and most likely about 1763 when he would have been 21 years of age..
It is accepted by family chroniclers that sister Magdalena was born 1759, John Buzzard in 1761, sister Esther Buzzard in 1763 and sister Elizabeth Buzzard in 1765. This leaves only the years 1760, 1762 or 1764 for Frederick, Jr.; however, these years are inconsistent with the two-year birth interval pattern so common in that era, and reflected in the birth yea rs of his siblings.
Accordingly, it is proposed and accepted here that Frederick Buzzard, Jr. was a twin of either sister Esther or Elizabeth - and most likely Esther Buzzard (1763).
HAMPSHIRE COUNTY, VIRGINIA (now WEST VIRGINIA).
Frederick, Jr.'s father and family removed from Chester County, Pennsylva nia to Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) with other German families in the latter part of 1786. It is proven that George Frederick, Jr. joined in this move as there is a listing of him in a 1787 Hampshire County tax list. (Source: THE BUZZARDS OF HUNTINGTON COUNTY, INDIANA; Pinkerton, Max, page 15).
"Frederick" Buzzard, "Elizabeth Buzzard" and "Mary Buzzard" witnessed the wedding and signed the marriage certificate of ISAAC BROWN and REBECCA BONSALL who wed 15th Day, of 4th month, 1802 at "Beergarden," under aus pices of the Hopewell Monthly Meeting, Frederick County, Virginia. (Source: Hopewell Friends History 1734-1934, Frederick County, Viriginia; Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD; 2nd Edition, 1993; pg. 324.
"Beergarden" is a misspelling of the Society of Friends (Quaker) BEAR GARDEN MONTHLY MEETING set up in 1767 and located in Hampshire County, Virgin ia (now West Virginia). Presumably "Elizabeth" was ELIZABETH LATTIG BUZZARD and "Mary" Buzzard was his sister MARY MAGDALENA BUZZARD, because their daughter Mary would have been only about 12 years of age.
This record indicates that "Frederick" and "Elizabeth" Buzzard were f or an unknown time members of the Society of Friends (Quakers). It is unli kely that they were Quakers while in Pennsylvania, as there is a record th at he was a member of a militia unit in 1784 - quite contrary to Quaker pr inciples. However, by moving into the Mill Branch Valley they were enteri ng an area heavily populated to this time by Quakers.
George Frederick Buzzard, Jr. owned slaves in 1810 and 1820 that he likely acquired after 1802. Slavery was abhorbent to Quakers, in general, alt hough some very early Quakers did own slaves. However, this was inevitably "reported" to the governing meeting and the family disowned. That the family does not appear in Quaker records after 1802 strongly suggests th at this is what happened.
1810 CENSUS.
Three Buzzard families resided in an unspecified township in Hampshire County, Virginia in 1810, all of whom were headed by men born 1765 or earlier. One was "John Buzzard." The other two were headed by a "Frederick Buzzard." One of these was George Frederick Buzzard, Sr. (b. 1719) who resided alone on a farm adjacent to the farm of his son John (b. 1761), and bo th recorded on page 771 of the enumeration. The other "Frederick" Buzza rd was GEORGE FREDERICK BUZZARD, JR. who lived some distance away, recorded earlier on page 760 of the census. According to family historians the t hree farms were purchased by the senior Frederick for he and his two so ns when they moved to Hampshire County in 1786.
The younger "Frederick Buzzard" household, in addition to himself, includ ed a female born 1766-1784 (ELIZABETH LATTIG), four sons born 1785-179 4, a daughter born 1795-1800; and, a male child born 1801-1810. In additi on, they had 5 slaves of undetermined age. (Source: 1810 US Federal Cens us of Virginia, Hampshire County, Unknown Township, page 760)
Missing from the George Frederick Buzzard, Jr. household in 1810 were: son GEORGE (FREDERICK) BUZZARD (III) who, according to 1830 and 1840 Ohio c ensus data was born in 1780 or 1781; son ROBERT BUZZARD and daughter SARAH BUZZARD, who had migrated by then to Ohio; and, daughter MARY BUZZARD w ho had married JACOB JENKINS, JR. in Hampshire County in "1810."
Thus, the daughter must have been SUSAN BUZZARD, the only known daughter not accounted for in the 1810 census whose birth year has previously only b een estimated as "circa 1787."
Three of the four males born 1785-1794 were HENRY BUZZARD (b. 1790-1791 ), ADAM BUZZARD (b. circa 1792) and JOHN BUZZARD (b. 1794). The four th is an unknown son born prior to 1790; probably, 1785-1789.
There is no previous report of a son born 1801-1810. Accordingly, it is b elieved that this was WILLIAM BUZZARD (b. 1800), the son of recently widow ed GEORGE FREDERICK BUZZARD (III).
1820 CENSUS OF HAMPSHIRE COUNTY, VIRGINIA.
In 1820 four Buzzard families and families into which they intermarried a rerecorded on the same enumeration page (227) for an unspecified township area in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) that was probably the " Bloomery District" at Timber Ridge. (Source: 1820 US Federal Cen sus of Virginia, Hampshire County, Unknown Township, page 227).
Recorded in order were:
* HENRY BUZZARD, the son of George Frederick Buzzard, Jr.'s brother Jo hn Buzzard, Sr. (deceased) and Mary Ann High, and Henry's wife MARY GRO VE and family.
*JACOB JENKINS (Jr.) and wife Mary Buzzard, the daughter of Frederick Buzzard, Jr. and wife Elizabeth Lattig Buzzard.
*HIRAM ROGERLY.
* GEORGE KITER (KEITER, JR.), son of George Keiter and George F. Buzzar d, Jr.'s sister ESTHER BUZZARD and, presumably, his wife ELIZABETH ACRE.

George Frederick Buzzard, Jr. died shortly thereafter. On February 182 1, Joseph Kinney was appointed guardian for his chilren Elizabeth, "Kitty ," Mary and Susan, all under 14, identified as orphans of his wife Susan ( Buzzard) Kinney and "grandchildren of Frederick Buzzard, deceased." (Origi nal source: Hampshire County Minute Book Abstract Volume II 1817-1823, com piled by Vicki Bidinger Horton; 1994).
This indicates that he died between the visit of the enumerator in the sum mer or fall of 1820 and February 1821.
There were some issues raised by his death that greatly delayed its settle ment. For instance, his estate was not appraised until August 19, 1823. An d, it was not until 1839 that Elizabeth was granted 1/3 of his estate -- s uggesting that some of her sons, perhaps, were contesting his will.
If is believed that his son George (Frederick) Buzzard (III) removed short ly thereafter to Ohio, where he is enumerated in the 1830 census.
