I recently discovered a treasure trove for me on burials of members of my family tree at Find-A-Grave.
One particular burial that intrigued me was "Elizabeth Buzbee March 15, 1864" buried at the VA's Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Escambia Co, Florida. The national cemeteries are primarily for military personnel and their families (although other people do creep in).
The likely Buzbee families were the ones living in southeast Alabama that show up in Florida on the 1870 census. However, Pensacola and Fort Barrancas in 1864 were a Union stronghold and the Buzbees had being living in the South (SC-NC, GA, AL) since before the Revolution, so what would be the connection?
There are two likely suspects, the wives of brothers Basill (lots of variations on his name, this is the simplist)and Elisha (named afer his grandfather from SC).
Basill's family moved to and stayed in Escambia Co, but he is widowed by the 1870 census. He died in 1884 and is buried in Escambia Co, but he is not buried with Elizabeth.
Elisha, as it turns out, became a member of the UNION 1st Florida Cavalry. It could be that Elisha was actually a Unionist, or it could be that he joined this unit to help quell the extreme lawlessness in the area at that time. In any case, it may help explain why his branch stayed in Escambia while so many other family members went farther south to the Hillsborough Co area. If his wife died, she would be eligible for burial at Barrancas.
Ancestry.com has a pension card for Elisha Buzbee of Troop E, 1st Florida Cavalry (definitely not a Confederate unit). Elisha received an invalid's pension on 16 September 1882; Elizabeth received a widow's pension on 2 June 1888, so it is not this Elizabeth buried at Barrancas.
So this is what I think. Elisha, either because he is in sympathy with the Union, or to get the protection Fort Barrancas offers, or both, joins the Union army, and is allowed to move his extended family, including brother Basill's family to the area. Basill's wife Elizabeth dies, and as a soldier's family member, is buried in the Barrancas cemetery. When Basill dies, he no longer has a connection with the US Army, the fort or the cemetery, so he is not buried there, but at the Beulah Baptist Church cemetery.
I haven't found where Elisha and his Elizabeth ended up.
And I don't have any explanation for the FJ Buzbee and FV Buzbee also buried at Barrancas. Anybody have any ideas?
(And it seems that at least some of the Buzbees were people who kept to the minority opinion, wherever they were. There is family story that Elisha's Elizabeth was at least part Indian; Kinchen Busbee in Caldwell Co had a Free Black child living with his family, and at least one of the Buzbee ancestors back in South Carolina was a Tory during the Revolution.
