Sarah Elizabeth Hoisington (known as Eliza) was born in Vergennes, Vermont on 12 January 1804, sixth child of Job and Sarah Elizabeth (Knapp) Hoisington. The family moved to Buffalo, New York, where in 1813, Eliza's father Job was killed defending Buffalo against the British and British Indians during the War of 1812. Eliza's mother eleven years later in 1824, remarried a widower, Asahel Munger, Sr. and the family lived in Lockport, a town near Buffalo.A year later, in 1825, Eliza, aged 21, married her stepfather's son, Asahel Munger, Jr.In 1839, Asahel Jr., a carpenter, felt called to be a missionary. He and Eliza set out to becme missionaries to the Indians of the Oregon Territory. They travelled with another missionary couple, Rev. and Mrs. J.S. Griffin, across the plains and over the mountains to the mission at SWaiilatpu in Oregon Territory.Asahel Munger kept a journal of this hard and demanding trip: "The Diary of Asahel Munger & Wife" printed in the Quarterly of the Oregon Historical Society, V. 8 no. 4, December, 1907, reprinted by Ye Galleon Press, Fairfield, Washington, 1992.
On 25 June, 1840, Eliza gave birth to a daughter, Mary Jane Munger. In 1841 the Mungers removed to the Willamette Mission where Asahel worked in the blacksmith shop. Asahel became mentally ill and "to test his faith" threw himself onto the blazing forge, looking for a miracle - but he died a week before Christmas, 1841.
Eliza was now a widow with a baby daughter.
Two years later, she married Henry Buxton, Sr., a widower, with one son, on 6 April, 1843.Henry had married his first wife, Frances Thomas on 12 June, 1828. She was the daughter of an officer of the Hudson Bay Company and his wife, a Cree Indian. The couple had one son, Henry, Jr., born 15 November, 1829. In 1841, the Buxton family set off for the Oregon Territory with other British citizens, as part of a plan to lay claim to the Territory for Britain.
While on the journey, Frances Buxton fell from her horse and was injured, dying of her injuries, and being buried at Fort Nisqually. In 1842 Henry Sr. continued south with his son and settled on the Tualatin Plaines (now Forest Grove, Washington County, Oregon).
A year later in April, 1843, Eliza Munger and Henry Buxton were married. The household consisted of the married couple; Henry's son Henry Jr. age 13 and Eliza's daughter mary Jane Munger, nearly 3 years old. In 1844 Eliza had a second daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Buxton.
Henry Jr. married Rosannah Woolly in 1846. Mary Jane Munger married Darius Smith.Sarah Elizabeth Buxton married Charles Reynolds. Charles and Sarah Elizabeth Reynolds had four children: Celia, William, Laura and Ednia.
In 1870, Henry Buxton Sr,. died, leaving Eliza a widow after her long second marriage of 27 years. Eliza died 3 May, 1890, and is buried, I understand,in Mountain View Memorial Cemetery, Forest Grove, Oregon.
I would be interested in contacting any descendants of Sarah (Buxton) Reynolds, as I am researching the Hoisington family, as I am descended from Sarah Elizabeth Hoisington (Munger) Buxton's brother, a missionary to Ceylon, Rev. Henry Richard Hoisington.
Also interested in seeing a photograph of her grave.
I wonder if the descendants of Henry Buxton Jr. have any further information about Henry Sr's farm and the home where Henry Sr. and Eliza lived.Or any photographs of the family.
Best wishes,Maida Follini
