I have this book and even though Carroll has William Buttrill "saying" he was in the Revolution there is not "proof" that he was. Carroll states that in the book and says that more research is needed.
Unfortunately, appyling for a Georgia Land Lottery draw and "saying" you were in the Revolution (formal application and proof were not necessary since is was basically a big land grab), having REV on your tombstone even though recognized by the DAR, and having your obit "say" you fought is not enough proof to join a DAR chapter these days. I know that some of William's descendants have joined both the DAR and the SAR under him, but there is not solid proof that he fought. They became much stricter these days evidently after they discovered that some Tories had been given membership! Please know, I'm not saying that he didn't fight, we just can't prove it.
I can however prove that William's father-in-law, Burwell Williams, gave aid to the American troops. I have copies of the originals from the NC Archives. And that is what will get my line and anyone else from William and Mary Williams Buttrill's line into the DAR and the SAR today.
May I ask where you live and your line of descent?
My line is William Buttrill>William Buttrill>Thomas E.>John Wilkens>Helen>Cecil>me
