First generation:Robert Button, came to Essex C. VA from England with his brother, Thomas in 1666. (Ref): Wertenberger's "History of Virginia" and Beverly's "History of Virginia". From the beginning in America members of the Button family descended from Robert were largely farmers through many generations until the beginning of the 20th Century.
Children:
Second generation 1. John who married Elizabeth, widow of Joseph Bridger of Surry Co VA.
Children: John Jr., Harmon, William, Elizabeth, who married John Coons, Mary, who married Jacob Crim, Sarah who married Jacob Hanback.
Third generation: John Jr. died in Culpepper Co, VA in 1785, He married Susannah Hopper, daughter of of Thomas and Mary Ann (George) Hopper Culpepper Co. Children: John, William, Harmon, Lucy, born ca 1756, Thomas.
Harmon. born ca 1715, of Germantown, Fauquier Co Va. married as second husband Catherine Kemper, born July 15, 1720, eldest daughter of John Kember, the 1714 Colonist, who married Alice Uterback. By her first marriage to John Smith, Catherine had three children.
Children:1.Jacob, born ca 1750 at Germantown, VA.
2. Ann, born ca 1754, married Abraham Hockman
3. Susan, died unmarried prior to 1801
4. Sarah, born ca 1757 married John Sinsel.

iii Harman Sinsel
ivCatherine Sinsel
5. Catherine, born ca 1761; married Elijah Bashaw, child: susannah Bashaw; she married ----- Sanders, had a son in the Florida war.

7. Henry; born ca 1767; died in infancy
Fourth Generation:
John Button born in Culpepper Co, VA. This family moved early to Oldham Co. KY
Children:
1. John, born ca 1785
2. William, born ca 1785
3. Charles, born 1793
4. Jesse, born 1795
5. Seth, born Nov 21, 1795
6. Moses, born 1806
Harmon Button born ca 1753; died May 3, 1822. He married Sarah Fishback born ca 1755, daughter of John Frederick and Ann Elizabeth (Holtzchaw) Fishback of the Little Fork. Harmon's will dated Apr 10, 1822 was probated in Culpepper Co May 20 1822. They had nine children who lived to adulthood. According to legend, a daughter, Elizabeth was disinherited. Five of these children joined the western migration from Virginia to Barren Co. Kentucky around 1800.
Children:
1. Twins, died in infancy.
2. William, only surviving membre of triplets, he moved to Kentucky.
3. Elias, born Apr 27, 1783. Married Martin Spillman, moved to Kentucky.
4. Elizabeth
5. Hannah, born 1787; married 1807 Burrell Luttrell. remaining in Virginia.
6. John, Nov 25, 1781. Married Martha Spillman. Moved to Kentucky.
7. Frederick, born July 1, 1784, Married Katherine Wayman. remained in Virginia.
8. Mary (Polly) born July 12, 1790; married George P. Doyle. Remained in Virginia.
9. James, he married Feb 20, 1821, daughter on Johnzie Tongue in Fauquer Co. VA moved to Kentucky.
10 Martin; moved to Kentucky, married Elizabeth Tongue.
