The name "Button" is derived from French "Bethune". The de Bethunes, Norman barons, came from France to England circa 1037. Refer to "Genealogical Sketch of the Early Descendants of Matthias Button" by A. Button, Saranac, Michigan, 1903 for further information.

Burke's "Landed Gentry", in most libraries, has much information on Button, both in England and early American. Probably all Buttons' were related in some way. Matthias Button, who came to America from England with Governor John Endicott, landing in Salem, Massachusetts, September 6, 1628, was probably the first Button in America.
