Bill, I know nothing about the Buttons other than the immediate family into which my great-grandfather's sister and brother married. Preble County is on the Western edge of Ohio, and Vinton is about five counties to the East. The Buttons is not a direct line so I have not pursued it, but would be interested in further information. My great-grandfather, John William Rhea died at Gettysburg, but it was Gettysburg, Ohio in the northern part of Preble County. He was wounded in the battle at Franklin, Tennessee on Nov. 30, 1864, and died some years later from the effects of his wound. He was with the Ohio 64th Infantry. I just thought about looking in the Preble County Ohio History, written in 1992. I have a Rhea article in it. There are other references to Buttons. 1st, An Ellic Lutz married Mary Alice Button, daughter of Whitfield and Elmira Cassel Button. In 1854 Whitfield came from Barren County, KY. He was an orphan and lived with Button and Huffman uncles in Preble County. 2nd, Helena M. button, born in 1843, married Oscar William Silver. They had a son, Horatio Zimmerman Silver. The name "Zimmerman" was the middle name of Elizabeth Button who married Harmonious Rhea, so I would assume that Helena was of the same Button line. 3rd, "In 1805, [Armstead Huffman] married Nancy Button, the third of seven children of Jacob Button and Sarah Morgan Button. Armstead and Nancy were married in Barren County, Kentucky, near Glasgow." From the above, it appears that some Buttons lived in Barren County, KY, the same county my g-g-g-grandfather, Robert Rhea came from when he moved to Preble County, Ohio in 1812. So you might consider looking at records in Barren Co., KY for Buttons. It was formed from Green and Warren Counties in 1799. The address is: Barren County Courthouse, 1st l, Glasgow, KY 42141-2812. Telephone: (502) 641-3783. There are no Buttons listed in the marriage records for Green County, which adjoins Barren.. -Robert Perry Rhea
