Hi Mary Ekland I haven't talked to you in several years. I saw your communication regarding the Button family and Mary Button. I believe I have solved the Mystery of who Married John Goodman Jr Madewell. I believe her name was Mary C Terry, Daughter of Malinda Caroline Carter and an unknowm man named Terry who probably died in the Civil war. The proof can only be found in analyzing a bunch of census data since I doubt that a marriage license for her mother still exist. There were Many Terry's killed in the civil war and I cannot narrow down which one was Malinda's husband. Any, way I already searched the Button family and I am sure that Hezekiah Button never had a daughter named Mary. I am also sure that census takers messed up information so badly in 2 of the censuses that it has caused all the confusion. Once you recognize the mistakes they made, it is then easy to flesh out the truth. If you are willing, here goes. Find, Larkin Carter b-1807 Kt in 1850 Russell county Kentucky dist-2 I-9. Malinda age 15 b-1835 Indiana. Remember she is the only child born in Indiana. Find, Calvin Carter b-1837 Kt, 1860 Russell County Kentucky, Russell tws I-70. Malinda is living with her brother and has a son listed as william P b-1859. (Remember the name William P). Her daughter Mary b-1857 was also there but the census taker goofed and apparently thought she was the daughter Mary Evans. The proof will be in the next census and a later birth record for her brother. The last name of Terry was not mentioned and it is possible that Malinda had the children out of wedlock. . Find, James 1836 and Malinda Hunter b-1837 Indiana in the 1870 census Hickory county Missouri, Montgomery Tws I-14 Children listed are Mary b-1853 and Perry b-1858. This census is really messed up. The census taker obviously did not get the information from a family member and probably got all of it from a neighbor who knew Malinda and the kids but did not know the name of her husband. His real name, as revealed by later censuses is John H.O. Hunter. Daughter Mary has actually married by this time and was living in the household of William Allen Madewell and wife Narcissa, but the neighbor didnt know that. Find, JOHN H Hunter b-1836 and Caroline b-1838 In. 1880 census Hickory county Missouri, Wheatland d-239 I-24. Note that John G Jr and Mary Madewell are living next door. Find, listed under John H. O'Hunter b-1836 Kt and Malinda C. In the 1900 census Missouri, Hickory, Wheatland Tws, I-8. Note a grand daughter names Jennie Madewell. Her name was actually Janie. She was next to the last child of Mary and John G Jr Madewell and she joins her mother years later in Oklahoma and marries Martin Kelly Tremain b-1866 Mo. The only way that Janie Madewell could be a grandaughter is for the Hunter's to have had a daughter that married a Madewell. By this time Mary with all her other children are living next door, and she is widowed. Go back to the 1860 census and notice that Malinda's son was listed as William P. On the 1870 census he was listed as Perry. His name is actually Wiliam Perry Terry b-1859 Kt. A birth record can be found in Hickory county in 1884 his wife Harriett (Dixon) gave birth to Cary Caroline Terry, the father was William Perry Terry. If Mary's brother has a last name of Terry then the odds are hers is the same. William and Harriett Terry can also be found in the 1880 census of Hill county Texas on the same page as Joseph Hildreth Madewell, wife Edie and 9 children. One more note, Harriette Dixon's mother was Annie Madewell (who married a John Doxon), daughter of John William Madewell and Annis Dixon. William Perry Terry later moved to Oklahoma also not far from his sister. I know it has been a mystery to many people and I have had her information on my family tree for about 6 months ago and have received no inquiries. I hope this is not too complicated. This is the first time I have tried to explain it to anyone and you are the test case. I have read many of your communications and I have noted your diligence. Examine it and tell me if you think it is valid. P.S my line is John Allen Madewell and Narcissa Tabor. My family is from Denton Texas. Notify Administrator about this message?
