Hi Joe,
I recently found at: http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/archive.asp?view=ArchiveItems&ArchiveID=13&FID=440577&LID=440671&FL=B&Page=1http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/archive.asp?view=ArchiveItems&ArchiveID=13&FID=440577&LID=440671&FL=B&Page=1,Lists the revolutionary war service card for a John Butt from York County, PA. His record indicates he was in the Pennslyvania Militia, Certificate # 13,337, register volume B, page 114. Also listed is a Jacob Butt form York County , PA militia, certificate # 13,258, register volume B, page 111. Cound this be the John Butt who married Susannah (ancestor of the Union County, GA branch of the family) and his brother Jacob Butt who both came to SC? If we could find a John Butt marrying a Susannah in this area of Penslyvania, it would certainly shed some light on our research. It is an interesting possibility that bears more research. Jacob Butt's rank is Corporal in the 3rd Battalion of York County, PA. his captain is Rinehart Bott (that's right, Bott with an "o"). The certificate is dated in 1780. Another cert. for a Jacob Butt is dated 10-26-1786 and another cert. for a John Butt serving under a LT. Lancaster in the 4th Battalion, 5th Company, 4th Class dated 6-8-1872. Of course there could have been two seperate John and Jacob Butts or they could have served in different regiments at different times and received certificates for each enlistment. In Rinehart Bott's battalion is also an Adam Butt , who was in service 1780-1783. Could he also related to us? During the American Revolution, it was common for family members to join the same miltia. What do you think? Hope I haven't been too confusing.
