James Butts 8/28/05
I have not seen any of what Cora gave Elizabeth...I don't believe Elizabeth has any of it crossed-referenced into a computer as she mentiones boxes of notes, etc.She is in her 80's and living in Young Harris, GA. The last time we had contact was mid-2002. As I mentioned she is the 2nd wife of Eugene Lashley, son of Mary Elizabeth Butt (E.W. Daughter) & Alonzo "Lon" Lashley.
Reviewing some of her e-mails, she says: I have a copy of a petition from Pickens County SC dated Oct 29, 1829 filed by James Cole, administrator for the estate of John Butt.
She says: John Butt,1780, was born in PA & not in VA. (This is supported by his son's 1850 union census.)
She says: I have a note that indicates Jakie's grandfather was an earlier John Butt born in PA & died Jan 7, 1827 in PA. (Now, lot of researchers seem to say John Butt Sr's father was a Thomas Butts but this doesn't check out for me. I was lucky to be in contact with a descendant of This Thomas Butts who was a member of the DAR & she had the paperwork to prove This Thomas Butts did not father both a Jacob & a John Butt.)
John Butt Sr had a brother Jack Jacob Butt. This I believe because Elizabeth mentioned it as well as Jim Bob Dockery. Jack Jacob Butts is where Cameze Butts, author of "The Heddens of North Georgia" comes in. Also from this line enters, Carlie Glen Butts, author of "The Butts Generations".
Carlie writes: Jacob Beriak Sr, one of 4 sons of Jack Jacob Butt, born in Rockingham County VA, came with his father, mother and brother John to Edgefield County SC in the year 1790. His father's brother, John Butt (I believe this is our John Butt, b. 1730), had come to SC in the year 1781 & settled in Pickens District of SC. (In 1781 he would have had to settle in the Pendleton District of SC because the Old Pickens District & the Old Anderson Districts weren't formed till 1826).
He goes on to say: According to the census records of 1820, John Beriak Sr is the only head of house listed. Neither his father, Jack Jacob Butt nor his uncle, John Butt are living in SC. However, his uncle, John Butt, appears in the VA census in 1820; therefore, it appears that his father & his uncle moved back to VA about 1818 & his father died in VA in 1826.(Now, I'm not sure where Jack Jacob went but 1818 was the Year Habersham County GA was formed and I believe that when our John Butt went. He's listed there in 1821 in Captain Victor's(?)District.
You can find all of Carlie's posting on this if you go to SC Gen Web & search under Butt.
John Lyon would be a good guess for Matilda'a husband. She shows up in Union County without him.
Hadn't thought much about the "Gordon" thing.
I have a copy of Hearthstones of home & found it rather disappointing. I will say, Jerry Taylor has helped me more on my husband's family than any book I'ld ever be able to find.
