BUTLER MARRIED TO KINSLEY
I have found TWO JAMES BUTLERS, BOTH MARRIED TO A UNIS KINSLEY.
James Butler, b. Oct. 8, 1763, was born in Cumberland, RI-as the son of Benjamin Butler & Susanna Whiting. (documented). Many LDS records show that James married a Unis Kinsley b. 1761, in VT, and daughter of Samuel Kinsley & Sophia White. Not so. I have a b/c showing Eunice was born in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, MA (not VT) & documentation of her marriage to Dr. Sylvanus Leonard of Bridgewater, MA, in 1787. Maybe Leonard died, or they divorced. Eunice would have had to have married James Butler of RI before 1802. (Stephen Kinsley Butler born 1802).
Another James Butler, born in CT.abt 1755, is listed as a Sgt in the DAR Patriot Index. He married a Unis Kinsley in VT, and died 1829, in VT--according to the record. I'm thinking that the VT James was the Green Mountain Boy. RI James would have been 13 years old at the time the Rev. War broke out--but I know boys joined early on.
No Unis Kinsley would have been born in Fletcher, VT, in 1761. Fletcher was charted in 1781, and the first girl child born there was Lamoille Fullerton, b. 1788-89. ("Vermont Historical Gazetteer, 1781.")
So who was born where and was married to whom? We document that:
(1)Eunice Kinsley, of Bridgewater married Sylvanus Leonard in 1787. (Maybe he died or they were divorced).
(2) James Butler, son of Ben Butler & Sophia White was born in Cumberland, RI, Oct. 8, 1763.(Not CT)
(3)According to the DAR Index, a James Butler b. abt 1755, in CT, and mustered in VT, married a Unis Kinsley in VT.
SO does anyone have a line on the Unis Kinsley in VT and more on the James Butler b.in CT-or a line on anything!?
Who did the RI James marry-and when?
Do you have any documentation or family histories that would shed some light on this muddied situation? I'd appreciate any help!
Thanks, Carole
