Thank you for your response. As so often happens, one site that was so super when I bookmarked it is no longer on the Web.(Sigh.) Another has been revised.
My Butlers were of the Dunboyne variety, apparently, and it would certainly be a good idea to "give in" and join the Butler Society.I find myself joining a number of family/surname societies hunting for the remaining shreds of proof I need, and it's getting pricey!;-)
I notice from the burial details of one generation that the head of the family was buried in the Chancel, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rock of Cashel.Farther on, more were buried in the churchyard at St. John's Church, Cashel.
When you say that the Ormonds were "Church of Ireland," I assume that C. of I. is protestant and not Roman.(I am only just beginning to acquire knowledge about Ireland's Church history.)That would mean that I might have access to a few original records, in spite of the fire in Dublin wich claimed so many.
I did find several churches which originally were R. C. abbeys or cathedrals, but which are now protestant. And there are clear indications that the Dunboyne Butlers married with little regard to faith:it seemed that there was almost a family policy of marrying the daughters of one's bitterest enemies, and then ending up in wars with the in-laws.Or sometimes the subject ancestor would align himself with his in-laws to fight his own cousins.Fascinating bunch of people.
Thanks again,
Sarah
