Robin,
Thanks for responding. No, I am not assuming that Sally Butler is any relationship at all to my George. However, I have to explore that possibility. One suggestive element is that George indicates his mother was born in TN, and Sally's entry (1880 census) indicates that she was born in TN.She is also old enough to be his mother.Obviously, this isn't enough to establish a match, so I was trying to see if anyone knew more about Sally Butler.
George was born in MO ca. 1846.In 1869 he married Amanda Darrow in Jasper Co., MO and they are shown there in the 1870 census, living with her widowed mother. They moved to Texas about 1872 going directly, as best as I can tell, to Montague Co.It appears that some of Amanda's kin have also moved there (James Darrow and John Dameron being two).
I have also wondered whether George might be related to the William, George and James Butlers of SC.William and son, George, served as the U.S. agent to the Cherokee between 1849 and 1860, and George and James moved to Christian Co., MO in the early 1840s.George married Nannie or Nancy Thurston in Christian Co. (daughter of Street Thurston of SC), while his brother, James, married a daughter of Cherokee chief Richard Taylor.I've not been able to find any information regarding the children of George Butler and Nannie Thurston. She died during or sometime shortly after the Civil War, and George returned to SC and married twice more before his death.
If this latter connection were valid, then Sally Butler could not be George's mother, but could be some other relation (or none at all). There are five other Butlers in Montague Co., TX in the 1880 census, but I have not been able to determine any connections between them and my George.
