Marlene, thank you for your post. I am familiar with the Kent Island Butlers but have not been able to make a connection with my Peter Butler. I have found some Butlers with similar names (Peter, Richard, Tobias) in northern Virginia and near Richmond. Also Elizabeth (?) Beckwith who married Peter Butler may have come from Virginia. There was a large Beckwith family in Virginia, but I don't know what Elizabeth's maiden name was. I will look through my files and see what I have on your early Maryland Butlers. Have you tried the Maryland Hall of Records website? There is a terrific amount of information available on it and I have found a lot of information inthe Archives of Maryland series which is now available online. Here is the URL:

Did you know that there were English settlers on Kent Island before the Calverts arrived in Maryland in 1634? I believe Claiborne established a trading post and community on Kent Island in 1631. These Kent Islanders were in dispute with the proprietor, Lord Calvert.
