I have been helping Butler relatives trace their ancestor Robert Butler born 1784 to James Butler and Anne(or Marion - Marion on Robert's christening record but Anne on his death record in 1861)Grierson in Peebles. He was Sergeant Robert Butler of the 1st Royals Foot.n 1823 he published an account of his life travelling the world! It is called "Narrative of the Life and Times of Serjeant # by Robert Butler. It can be down-loaded free from Google Books by following Peebles "robert butler" 1784.
It begins " I was born of poor but repectable parents in the town of Peebles, county of Tweedale upon the 3rd day of August 1784" This fits census info. At the end of the book he describes living in Greenock till 1820 when he moved to Edinburgh "where my elderly parents were residing" Soon after they had a meeting
"of 8 children all present except one who was a mason in England. Now it is somewhat remarkable that of these now present four had been scattereda little while before vey widely all over the world. My oldest brother belonged to the Artillery and was in America. I, next in order of time was in India, the third was in Spain with the 94th (Regiment) and the youngest was in Ireland with the Renfrewshire Regiment. All out of the army, each rewarded in his various way and all settled around Edinburgh." Here is your answer - William was Robert's younger brother born after his parents moved to Edunburgh. I have put the family on my tree on My Heritage.
