Two William Butlers of Dettingen Parish, Prince William County, VA
French emigres Jacque Gallahue (Gallahaut); Clement Chiveral (Chiveralle); Lewis Reno (Reynaud); Lewis Tackett (Tacquet); among others, were granted side-by-side tracts on the eastern side of "the Great Branch of the Occoquan River called Cedar Run and its head branches." The emigres' lands adjoined James Butler of Aquia and the Masons of Aquia.
James Butler of Aquia's plantation was situated on the Long Branch of Aquia ("Aquia Main Run") and its component branches, Dorrell's Run and the French Branch (later, Cannon's Run). All three runs converged with the Main Run of Aquia (Cedar Run). The plantations of James Butler of Aquia, George Mason, Junior of Aquia and his brother William Mason, adjoined one another in the fork of the Long Branch of Aquia and Cannon's Run.
A little north of Aquia Creek, the land of William Wigginton, father of Ann Wigginton, adjoined the Peytons, Masons, and Butlers of Aquia on Cedar Run and the branches of Aquia Creek.Among the items William Wigginton bequeathed in his LWT was one shilling to "my daughter, Ann Butler."
After George Mason, Junior of Aquia died, it was asserted his widow, Ann Ayle/Anapel, etc., married William Butler of Aquia, son of James Butler of Aquia. However, Aquia-William Butler married Ann Wigginton, daughter of William Wigginton. After Ann died, William Butler of Aquia married William Mason of Aquia's widow Mary [Tackett] Mason, who along with one of William Butler's two daughters filed a claim against William Butler's estate. At the time of his death, William Butler of Aquia, who did not have any sons, had 180 acres of land.
George Mason, Junior of Aquia's widow Ann Ayle/etc. married William Butler, the Gentleman Justice.
After his father's death, James Butler, Junior of Aquia is reflected in Stafford County's 1739 Quit Rent Roll with property on "Occoquan ('Beaver Dam and Aquia Run' [Cannon's Run']," and "Aquia Creek ('Beaverdam Run, Chappawamsic').It was Butler, Junior who sold land in Stafford County to John Chiveral, and it was Junior who, in 1760, leased his inheritance from his father, James Butler, Senior's 200-acre dwelling plantation in Stafford County, to one William Patterson, "(this) being the land the said Butler's father bought of Mr. Henry Peyton, deceased."
1950s' genealogists had a propensity to lump numerous unrelated surnamed branches into one family unit, yet these "old" genealogists' writings are unfortunately still considered gospel by some. Capt. James Butler, who migrated from Loudoun Co., VA to Edgefield District, SC, was land poor (near Bull Run) in Loudoun Co., tilling his land by himself, whereas the Butlers of Aquia had slaves and significantly more land.Meanwhile, Capt. Butler's neighboring brothers-in-law--Enoch and Nathaniel Grigsby, and Jacob Smith, all married to Capt. Butler's sisters, not his half-sisters--had considerably more land.
Capt. Butler was also pitifully land poor in Edgefield District, having possession of only 14 acres, which his son [Gen.] William Butler inherited.Capt. James Butler's wife's maiden name was Mary Elizabeth Simpson. The following are some of the descendants of Capt. James and Mary Elizabeth [Simpson] Butler:
Granddaughters Mary Simpson Brooks and Elizabeth Simpson Butler; great-granddaughter Elizabeth Simpson Griffin.
When widow Mary Elizabeth [Simpson] Butler married Russell Wilson, they named their only issue Simpson Wilson.
